Project Title: Simultaneous EEG and fMRI recordings of patient under propofol
Hugo Soulat

Project Summary: General anesthesia transformed the way we perform surgery and is essential for many diagnosis or therapeutic procedures. Yet, the spatiotemporal dynamics leading to a state of general anesthesia are still to be deciphered.

This project uses different imaging modalities to study propofol induced anesthesia on human subjects. In a nutshell, it aims at combining the spatial resolution of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the temporal resolution of electroencephalogram (EEG). Nevertheless, one of its main challenge comes from the magnetic field which corrupts the EEG. Therefore, we are developing statistical methods and signal-processing algorithms to relate the changes of EEG pattern under general anesthesia to the changes in neural activity in specific brain sites.
