Project Summary: My involvement in Dr. Courtine's lab was two-fold. I worked under the mentorship of Ms. Lucia Friedli and Ms. Janine Heutschi, two of Dr. Courtine's PhD students, who developed a rodent model for a multi-system rehabilitation strategy to regain locomotor function following a severe SCI. I participated in a follow-up study, which seeks to address some of the feedback received from their peers in the field. At around the 4-week mark of my stay in Lausanne, I was given the great opportunity to take on a task of my own, which is part of a larger ongoing study. The project seeks to elucidate the changes in neural activity that take place in the rodent motor cortex as the animal recovers from a single, paralyzing hemisection lesion to the thoracic spinal cord, and regains bipedal locomotion.
